In the vast and evolving landscape of Indian media, one name stands tall for transforming the concept of radio into a tool for grassroots empowerment—Dr. R. Sreedher. Known as the Father of Community Radio in India, Dr. Sreedher has played a pivotal role in shaping how communities use the airwaves to amplify their voices, preserve their cultures, and solve local problems. His vision of democratized media gave rise to a powerful movement that placed microphones directly in the hands of the people.
Early Life and Academic Background Dr. R. Sreedher hails from Tamil Nadu and began his career in academia. He has held degrees in science and communication, and his interest in the intersection of media and education would eventually define his life's work. Over the years, he served as a teacher, researcher, and director at various prestigious institutions, including:

Director, CEMCA (Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia), New Delhi

His academic interests were deeply rooted in communication for development, educational broadcasting, and alternative media systems.
Visionary Behind Community Radio in India

Though community radio was an idea that had floated in global circles since the 1940s, it was Dr. Sreedher who brought it to life in the Indian context.

2002: Dr. Sreedher was instrumental in initiating the concept of Campus Radio in India.

He helped launch Anna FM in 2004 at Anna University, Chennai—the first campus-based community radio station in India.

Padma Shri Award  - 2026

For his outstanding contributions to the field of Information and Broadcasting, Dr. Ramamoorthy Sridhar has been selected to receive the Padma Shri Award for the year 2026.

தகவல் மற்றும் ஒலிபரப்பு துறையில் சிறப்பான சேவையாற்றியதற்காக, 2026 ஆம் ஆண்டிற்கான பத்மஸ்ரீ விருது முனைவர் ராமமூர்த்தி ஸ்ரீதர் அவர்களுக்கு வழங்கப்பட உள்ளது.

முடிவுரை: ஒலி மட்டும் அல்ல, உரிமையும் கூட

டாக்டர் ஆர். ஸ்ரீதர் ஊடகத்தை மாற்றியமைத்தார். மக்களுக்கு குரல் கொடுத்தார், தங்களுக்குள் இருந்த திறமையை அவர்கள் உணரச் செய்தார். ஊடகம் என்பது யார் மேலான குரல் என இல்லை – அது யாருக்கும் உரிமை உள்ள கருவி. அவரது பாரம்பரியம், இன்று இந்திய ஊடகக் களத்தில் பசுமையாக வளர்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறது.

அவர் மக்களுக்கு மைக் மட்டும் கற்றுக் கொடுக்கவில்லை.
