இந்திய சமூக வானொலி இயக்கத்தின் முன்னோடியாகக் கருதப்படும் முனைவர் ஸ்ரீதர், "இந்திய சமூக வானொலியின் தந்தை" எனப் போற்றப்படுகிறார். வானொலியை மத்திய கட்டுப்பாட்டிலிருந்து மக்களிடம் கொண்டு சென்றவர் என்ற அடையாளம் அவருக்கு உண்டு. ஊடகம் என்பது மக்களின் குரல், மக்களின் உரிமை என்ற கருத்தை நடைமுறையில் நிரூபித்தவர் அவர்.

அண்ணா பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் கல்வி மல்டிமீடியா ஆராய்ச்சி மைய (EMPC) இயக்குநராகவும், நியூ டெல்லியில் அமைந்துள்ள காமன்வெல்த் கல்வி ஊடக மையம் (CEMCA) இயக்குநராகவும் அவர் பணியாற்றியுள்ளார். கல்வி வானொலி, ஊடகக் கல்வி மற்றும் மாற்றுத் தகவல் அமைப்புகள் தொடர்பான அவரது பணிகள் தேசிய மற்றும் சர்வதேச அளவில் பாராட்டைப் பெற்றுள்ளன.

2004 ஆம் ஆண்டு, இந்தியாவின் முதல் சமூக வானொலி நிலையமான அண்ணா FM தொடங்கியதில் முக்கிய பங்கு வகித்தவர் முனைவர் ஸ்ரீதர். மேலும், ஜ்ஞான் தர்ஷன், ஜ்ஞான் வாணி, வ்யாஸ் போன்ற கல்வி ஊடக முயற்சிகளிலும் அவரது பங்களிப்பு குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. 2006 ஆம் ஆண்டு கல்வி நிறுவனங்கள் மற்றும் அரசு சாரா அமைப்புகளுக்கு சமூக வானொலி அனுமதி கிடைப்பதற்கான கொள்கை மாற்றத்திலும் அவர் முக்கிய பங்காற்றினார்.

ஓய்வுக்குப் பிறகும் சமூக வானொலி நிலையங்களுக்கு வழிகாட்டியாக இருந்து வரும் முனைவர் ஸ்ரீதர், பாட்காஸ்ட் மற்றும் பயிற்சிகள் மூலம் ஓரங்கட்டப்பட்ட சமூகங்களின் குரல்களை ஒலிக்கச் செய்து வருகிறார். இன்று இந்தியா முழுவதும் செயல்பட்டு வரும் 540க்கும் மேற்பட்ட சமூக வானொலி நிலையங்களுக்கு அவரது பங்களிப்பு அடித்தளமாக உள்ளது.

Padma Shri 2026 for Community Radio Pioneer Dr. R. Ramamoorthy Sridhar

Dr. R. Ramamoorthy Sridhar, widely regarded as the Father of Community Radio in India, has been selected for the Padma Shri Award 2026 for his outstanding contributions to the field of Information and Broadcasting.

Dr. Sridhar played a pioneering role in transforming radio into a people-centric medium, giving voice to grassroots communities and promoting participatory communication. He firmly believed that media should not remain a tool of centralized power, but must be placed in the hands of the people as an instrument of social change.

A former Director of the Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMPC), Anna University, and the Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA), New Delhi, Dr. Sridhar has contributed extensively to educational broadcasting, media literacy, and alternative communication systems at national and international levels.

He was instrumental in the launch of India’s first community radio station, Anna FM at Anna University in 2004. He also played a key role in major educational media initiatives such as Gyan Darshan, Gyan Vani, and Vyas Channel, and was central to policy efforts that led to the approval of community radio licenses for educational institutions and NGOs in 2006.

Even after retirement, Dr. Sridhar continues to mentor community radio stations across the country. Through training programmes and podcasts, he has amplified the voices of marginalized communities including senior citizens, tribal groups, transgender persons, and ex-servicemen.

With over 540 community radio stations operating across India today, his legacy remains deeply rooted in the nation’s media landscape.
